Jio is a telecom company started by Mr. Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Limited and India's richest man with net worth of $35.3 billion. Jio has the largest 4G LTE mobile network in India. Jio has given lots of free services like unlimited 4G LTE data, voice & video calls, messages and unlimited use of all Jio apps during its testing period.

Mr. Mukesh Amabani announced India's first intelligent feature phone called JioPhone at Reliance Industries' 40th Annual General Meeting, which was held on July 14, 2017. JioPhone is Made in India by young Indians for all Indians.

Specifications and Features:

The phone has alphanumeric keyboard with 4-way navigation button like many feature phones. It comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA display with a resolution of 240 pixels by 320 pixels. It also has a SD Card slot, bluetooth, camera (No word on megapixel count), torchlight and FM radio. Qualcomm India has confirmed in their latest tweet that JioPhone is powered by their 205 Mobile Platform. It supports 4G VoLTE.
According to Jio, the user interface of phone is easy and friendly to use. It supports upto 22 Indian languages. It has a virtual assistant. So, You can speak to the phone and it will understand what you want to do. You can make phone calls, send messages, listen to songs and watch movie trailers etc. using voice commands. You can also ask questions like when is Ganesh Chaturthi and it will reply you with the answer. The phone has screen mirroring feature which can be used to mirror apps like JioTV and JioCinema to bigger TV screens (or to a CRT).

Apps like NaMo (Narendra Modi), Facebook, Internet Browser and all Jio apps will come preinstalled on the phone, though WhatsApp is not supported at this moment. The phone has its own app store. It also has a distress button, long pressing the button 5 will automatically send your location to emergency contacts. It is very helpful in emergency situations.

The phone's hardware is NFC ready, It will support tap on payments in near future and Jio will introduce this feature via a software update later this year. By using this feature anyone can link their bank account via UPI and debit or credit cards to make payments.

Tariff Plans:

Voice calls will always be free on Jio network and so on JioPhone. Jio will bring digital freedom to JioPhone users by providing unlimited data starting from August 15, 2017. Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan plan will be available on JioPhone for only Rs.153 per month.

It also has a JioPhone TV-cable plan for those who want to mirror JioTV to bigger screens and it is priced at Rs.309 per month. Recharge sachets will also be available for those who cannot afford monthly plans, they are priced at Rs.24 for 2 days and Rs.54 for a week of usage.

Price and Availability:

JioPhone will be made available on 15th of August for beta program. Pre-booking will start from 24th of August through MyJio App or Jio Stores. It will be available in September on first come first serve basis. The cost of Jio Phone is effectively zero but there is a catch. A security fees of Rs.1500 is to be made to get your hands on JioPhone, which will be refunded after three years as promised by the company.
